ROY’S MOTEL & CAFE, 30″ X 40″ X 1.5″. original acrylic painting on canvas wall art. Roy’s Motel Cafe and service station in Amboy, California, on Route 66, The Mother Road. A dusty oasis in the Mojave Desert where Route 66 intersects with the Twenty Nine Palms Junction. Near Amboy Crater, an extinct volcano. Near Ludlow, Bagdad, Daggett. Kinda near Needles. Opened in 1938 by Roy Crowl and his Mrs., Velma. Business was good. Opened an auto repair garage and a gas station for travelers, the cafe and auto court bungalows for overnight guests. In 1959 Mr. Crowl erected a 50 foot high “neon boomarang” sign and built a new guest reception center, with it’s Mid-Century modern “Googie” architecture, resembling an “inclined roof flying over a glassed wedge.” Business was booming. Then, in 1972 traffic decline dramatically after the town was bypassed by I-40. “Business dropped down to zero.” lamented Roy himself! Back then, the population of Amboy was seven hundred. Total population as of 2008: Eight. Currently Roy’s is currently experiencing a comeback with a restoration of the cafe and plans to have the motel bungalows open for business soon.
