This flat-topped butte is a favorite spot for hikers and other adventurers serving as a starting point for the Kaibab Trail leading down to the Phantom Ranch , located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, on the east side of Bright Angel Creek. The Grand Canyon, with places like Wotan’s Throne and Toroweap Overlook, seems to have more than it’s share of ideal places that inspire desert paintings and art. Nature shows her artistic flair with all the shapes, textures and colors the canyon puts on display. You’re looking at Wotan’s Throne as the early morning sunrise illuminates the North Rim and the Grand Canyon in its rich warm glow. This picturesque summit is named after a mythical German deity, in keeping with the tradition of naming the Grand Canyon’s major geographical features after mythical deities. (At least it isn’t Sofi’s throne of Citibank summit. (UGH!) This is the view of the northeast aspect from the Cape Royal hiking trail at the North Rim. At an elevation of 7,721 ft, it is one of the most majestic rock mesas in the Grand Canyon National Park, located in Cococino County and is part of the Colorado Plateau and the Kaibab Plateau.
