You’re looking at Wotan’s Throne as the early morning sunrise illuminates the North Rim and the Grand Canyon in its warm glow. This 7721 foot high summit was named after a mythical German deity, in keeping with the tradition of naming the Grand Canyon’s geographical features after mythical deities. (At least it isn’t Sofi’s throne of Citibank summit UGH!) This is the view of the northeast aspect from the Cape Royal hiking trail at the North Rim. At an elevation of 7,721 ft, it is one of the most majestic rock mesas in the Grand Canyon National Park in Cococino County as part of the Colorado Plateau and the Kaibab Plateau.
This flat-topped butte is a favorite spot for hikers and other adventurists serving as a starting point for the Kaibob Trail leading down to the Phantom Ranch , locatede at the bottom of the canyon, on the east side of Bright Angel Creek. Oil on canvas panel. 12″ X 16″.
