SEDONA CATHEDRAL ROCK

SEDONA CATHEDRAL ROCKS  14″ X 18″ acrylic on canvas board. In a state famous for its awe-inspiring geological wonders, the red rock buttes of Sedona, Arizona are still in a class of their own. No wonder the nearby town of Prescott is full of art studios and galleries, new age shops, campers, birdwatchers and hikers. The red rocks change colors throughout the day, with the best of show occurring right around sunset. In this acrylic on canvas study, I wanted to portray the bright warm yellows of the sunlight hitting the buttes directly, contrasted with the same rock a couple of hundred feet lower, bathed in a deep cool orange mixing with traces of soft purple hues.

SEDONA CATHEDRAL ROCKS  14″ X 18″ acrylic on canvas board. Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona is always putting on a show. Located in the American southwest in the great state of Arizona, it has a lot of competition in nearby Grand Canyon National Park to the north and Monument Valley to the northeast. This natural sandstone butte is located in the Cococino National Forest in Yavapai County. The rock was formed by coastal sand dunes on the shore of the ancient Pedragosa Sea, from the Permian Era. Every hue, shade and value of the colors red and orange can be found here. The red rocks change colors throughout the day, with the grand finale occurring right around sunset. The intense red and orange colors come from iron oxide (rust) particles that are mixed in wit the sand. Cathedral Rock is one of the most photographed and painted landmarks in the American southwest.
