TAOS PUEBLO STUDY 11″ X 14″ oil on wood panel. Long before Columbus accidentally bumped into the New World on his way to India, people were living in the Taos Valley in northern New Mexico. Established in the late 13^th and early 14^th centuries, the Taos Pueblo is the longest occupied dwelling in North America. Spanish conquistador Hernando de Alvarado describes the structure as “adobe houses stacked very close together, five or six stories high.” Each home consists of two rooms. One room is used for living and sleeping. The second room is used for cooking, eating and storage. Each home is self-contained. The houses get narrower the higher they go. One family’s roof is another family’s terrace. Indoor plumbing and running water are prohibited. The adobe walls are several feet thick and were at one time used for defensive purposes.

TAOS PUEBLO STUDY 11″ X 14″ oil on wood panel. It is estimated that the Taos Pueblo has been continually inhabited for the last 1,000 years. That’s before Columbus made landfall in the Americas. Before Europe emerged from the Dark Ages. (I could make a Keith Richards joke, but I’m going to take the high road.) Adobe walls, some up to seven feet thisk, kept residents warm during the freezing cold winters and cool during the long hot summers.
