You’ll find ROY’S MOTEL BUNGALOWS right off of Route 66, as the Mother Road as it makes its way west through California’s Mojave Desert, through the town of Amboy, between Needles and Barstow. In the 1940’s, Roy’s was initially called Roy’s Garage & Cafe, when Roy added an auto court of tiny bungalows to rent rooms overnight to road-weary travelers. Thanks to Roy’s 50 ft. high “neon boomarang” sign, erected in 1959, travelers of Route 66, The Mother Road can even find Roy’s in the dark. From the 1950’s till 1972 was known as the “Motel era” for Roy’s and business was good. However, the day Interstate 40 opened up in 1972, bypassing Route 66, business “went down to zero.” Roy’s family owned the business until 2003, when Roy’s was sold to philanthropist Albert Okura. Currently Roy’s is experiencing a comeback with a restoration of the cafe and plans to have the motel bungalows open for business soon.
