CHACO DOORWAY 1 14″ X 18″ acrylic on masonite board. 2020. The stone framed doorways of the Pueblo Bonito ruins in Chaco Canyon are part of a pre-Columbian structure that was several stories tall and contained as many as eight hundred rooms. This major complex was planned and built in stages between AD 850 to AD 1150 by the Puebloan people. This was the center of their world. This world eventually covered a vast area of the present-day Southwest, including the San Juan Basin of New Mexico, and portions of Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. For over 300 years a diverse population lived and thrived within its sphere of influence.

CHACO DOORWAY 1 14″ X 18″ acrylic on masonite board. 2020. One can walk through this doorway when visiting the Chaco Canyon National Historic Park in northwestern New Mexico, halfway between Gallup and Farmington, and step into New Mexico’s pre-Columbian past. Known as the Chacoan sites, they are part of the homeland of the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico, the Hopi Indians of Arizona and the Navajo Indians of New Mexico. This valley was the center of a thriving indigenous culture a thousand years ago. The Land of Enchantment is full of reminders of the people who first settled New Mexico.
