To paint the Santa Fe Warbonnet in a way that conveys it’s sheer power and iconic presence, the artist chose acrylic paints and a combination of paint brushes and palette knives to apply the colors. The Warbonnet portrayed in the painting is the GE Dash 9-44CW diesel electric locomotive manufactured by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania. Weighing in at 212 tons, the Dash 9-44CW delivers 4400 horse power and a maximum speed of 74 mph. That’s a lot of train. That’s a lot of power. To visualize that power, some of the paint was applied with a pallette knife to give the feeling of sheet metal. The goal was to create a wall painting that conveyed the strength and presence of the Santa Fe Warbonnet. The acrylic paint was applied as to almost acheive the effect of being a sculpture.
