TOROWEAP STUDY  11″ X 14″ acrylic on masonite board, 2009. Located on the picturesque but remote North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Toroweap Overlook offers a glimpse at the start of a new day. Out of the dark abyss comes the meandering ribbon of the Colorado River as it continues to carve it’s way through the Canyon on it’s way past Yuma to the Gulf of Mexico, reflecting the rich orange sunrise off of the surface of this legendary river. Light and shadows are an artists constant collaborators when painting the Grand Canyon.

TOROWEAP STUDY 11″ X 14″ acrylic on masonite board, 2009. The subject matter of many Arizona landscape paintings feature horzontal surfaces, like high desert plains and vistas. But almost as many Arizona landscape paintings cover vertical surfaces. Depending on the time of day, the most brilliant colors can be found on canyon walls or on the many buttes and mesas that grace “The Grand Canyon State.” Toroweap Study”, for the most part, covers the latter. It can be a visceral experience for the artist. Laying down color with a #8 stiff bristle brush with a flat head. The artist almost feels like they are applying adobe instead of applying paint, feeling more like a sculptor than a painter. In some cases a palette knife enhances surface textures. Often the artist saves the best for last: Paint in the Colorado River, like a thin orange and yellow ribbon, in sharp contrast to the dark colors of the canyon.
