SANTA FE LOCO 352. 16″ X 20″ acrylic on masonite board. The mighty Santa Fe Railroad “Warbonnet” locomotive, named for it’s iconic paint scheme, looms like a massive southwest rock formation against a clear blue New Mexico sky. The railroad was named, in part, after New Mexico’s oldest city, and state capital. The Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe Railroad was chartered in 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison and Topeka, Kansas and Santa Fe, New Mexico. When the railroad was first being built, many of the tracks were laid right on top of the actual wagon ruts of the old Santa Fe Trail.  The ATSF did not reach its namesake city until a branch line from Lamy, New Mexico connected the Santa Fe Railroad to the city of Santa Fe in 1881. Ten years earlier the Santa Fe had become a major transporter of cattle brought up from Texas at the end of a cattle drive. How do you paint such a beast? Lay the paint on thick and use a palette knife to give it some texture. All aboard!
