SHIPROCK DAY 12″ X 16″ acrylic on masonite board. 2009. One of the most unique rock formations found in the Four Corners region of the American Southwest is Shiprock. Shiprock rises up from the desert plain in the Navajo Nation nearly 1600 feet in the Four Corners region, near Farmington, New Mexico. Shiprock was formed by the lava column inside an ancient volcano, and broke through the desert floor through a combination of seismic uplifting and erosion. holds special significance in Navajo religion, myth and tradition. It has been designated as a National Landmark by the National Park Service. Radiometric dating puts Shiprock’s geological age at around 27,000,000 years.
