TEE PEE CURIOS 18″ X 24″ giclee fine art print reproduction of the original acrylic on masonite board painting. Yet another iconic Route 66 landmark with distinctive architecture in Tucumcari, New Mexico, on the Mother Road. Tucumcari, New Mexico has more than it’s share of one-of-a-kind vintage motels, gas stations diners and souvenir shops that glow in the dark with classic eye-catching neon signs. And Tee Pee Curios stands out with it’s tee pee shaped entrance. Here, Mother Road travelers can load up on souvenirs for the folks back home. Originally built in 1944 as a Gulf Oil Service station on Route 66 when the highway was a two-lane highway. When the road was widened, the gas station had to remove it’s gas pumps and had to reinvent itself. Tee Pee Curios is the very last original curio shop in the state of New Mexico. Each fine art print is reproduced on acid-free archival paper using non-fading pigmented inks.

At one time the state of New Mexico had hundreds of curio shops. With the arrival of the Santa Fe Rail Road in the 1880s, hundreds of mom and pop trading posts, or curio shops sprang up around Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Selling hand-made artifacts, the shops expanded out from Santa Fe into smaller towns and railroad stops. With the massive boom in tourism with the opening of Route 66 in the 1030’s, trading posts exploded across New Mexico. After World War II everyone had cars again, everyone had gas again. Everyone had jobs again. And everyone had money. AGAIN! So Americans hit the road in record numbers, getting their kicks in Route 66. Chains like Bowlin’s became empires. Originally built as a gas station in 1944, Tee Pee Curios on Route 66, with it’s iconic tee pee shape front entrance and attention-getting neon signeage, is the last original curios souvenir shop left in the state of New Mexico.
