MELL’S MESA

1 150 $

MELL’S MESA 12″ X 16″ acrylic on masonite board. 2022. One of the things that draw me to the painting of Ed Mell is his design composition and the simplicity in which he breaks down his subjects into geometric forms. This creates a sense of depth, volume and dimension in each painting. His paintings look amazingly simple, that is until you try to draw or paint one. Then it becomes an art lesson. One of starting over and over again to find that perfect combination of light, color, shading and perspective. This gives Ed Mell the rare ability to make his abstract paintings take on a feeling of reality.

MELL’S MESA 12″ X 16″ acrylic on masonite board. 2022. Arizona artist and native son Ed Mell started his art career in the canyons of Manhattan. New York City. There he enjoyed a successful career as a commerical illustrator for several blue ribbon advertising agencies, design studios and magazine publications. But he missed his home state of Arizona. He missed the sunsets. the sun rises. The mountains. The canyons, The Buttes and the Mesas. In 1971 Ed left New York for Arizona and helped a friend establish a summer art program on the Hopi Indian Reservation at Hotevilla.  Ed never returned to the Big Apple. He followed in the footsteps of another legendaruy Arizona painter,  Maynard Dixon, who also got his start in the art business as a commercial illustrator. Andd the rest is southwestern art history!
